A resident was injured during a two-alarm fire in a high-rise building in Far Rockaway Wednesday morning.
The fire broke out at around 9 a.m. at 8000 Shorefront Pkwy. at the Dayton Towers and left one person with serious injuries.
Firefighters arrived on the scene just after 9:10 a.m. and found the victim in the lobby of the 16-story building. Upon further investigation, the FDNY discovered the blaze came from a second-floor apartment and saw heavy smoke coming out the windows.
Units also rescued a dog during the operation. “Thank god they found him. Praise god,” the dog’s owner said.
More than 100 firefighters from 25 units used two hose lines to knock down the main body of the fire. There was a brief moment where a firefighter went down and a mayday had to be called.
Firefighters searched the apartment, which was empty. “There was so much black smoke I thought there was some type of explosion,” a nearby onlooker said.
The fire was brought under control at 10:30 a.m.
