Morning runs just got easier for Jamaica residents, thanks to the public reopening of the York College Track and Field.

As of Monday, Aug. 12, the track and field, located at 160th Street, between Liberty Avenue and Tuskegee Airmen Way, is once again available for community use in the heart of downtown Jamaica.

The track is open to the public Monday through Friday, from 8-10 a.m. and 2-4 p.m. However, hours are subject to change without notice, as college activities, practices and games may require the use of the space.

Community members using the facility must adhere to strict guidelines, including prohibitions on pets, smoking, vaping, drug or alcohol use and public picnicking. Additionally, all children must be accompanied by an adult, and unauthorized activities such as unsanctioned sporting events, camping and barbecues are not allowed. Restrooms will be available to the public during designated hours.

York College Vice President of Finance and Administration Eduardo Rios announced on the college’s website that specialized lighting will be installed as part of the next phase of ongoing improvements. Currently, the track and field must be vacated before dusk due to the absence of lighting. Future upgrades include plans to install a new scoreboard, public safety booth and goalposts next year.
