In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, a Long Island-based non-profit is hosting a series of community events to raise awareness, celebrate survivors, and support the fight against breast cancer.

Paddle for the Cure NYC (PFCNYC) is a community-driven, not-for-profit organization that empowers breast cancer survivors through dragon boat paddling and offers support and wellness opportunities. The group aims to foster camaraderie, promote physical activity, and provide emotional healing for survivors, their families, and supporters.

Starting Oct. 5, participants can join PFCNYC for the weekly Saturday practice at the World’s Fair Marina in Flushing. The event, open to all paddlers, encourages early arrival at 10:30 a.m. for warm-ups. Registration is required before paddling.

On Oct. 12, PFCNYC invites the community to the “Sunset Pink Paddle for Dragon Light of Hope.” The evening paddle, scheduled from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., also at the World’s Fair Marina in Flushing, will include a special flower ceremony, music, and glow-in-the-dark accessories to celebrate life, love, and hope. Children 15 years and older are welcome to paddle with an adult companion. Food will be provided after practice.

Additionally, the organization is hosting the “Light of Hope Sunset Cruise” on Oct. 19. The Alive After Five Sunset Cruise departs from Pier 15 at 78 South St. in Manhattan and offers attendees breathtaking views alongside a delicious buffet. Boarding begins at 5:30 p.m., and the cruise will sail from 6 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $80 per person and include cruise entry and buffet access.

PFCNYC held two successful events in the past week. The annual “Bowl for Hope” on Oct. 1, supported by Women in Lighting + Design NYC and led by Kelly Roberts, provided a night of fun, teamwork, and friendly competition, raising awareness and support for breast cancer survivors. The following day, on Oct. 2, volunteers and participants gathered for the Cultural Diversity Celebration at Elmhurst Hospital, which featured cultural performances, food tastings, and music. Both events were pivotal in uniting the community and advancing PFCNYC’s mission.
