A moped rider from Jamaica was killed while riding just north of JFK Airport in South Ozone Park on Saturday night.

Police from the 106th Precinct in Ozone Park responded to a 911 call of a motor vehicle collision on the Nassau Expressway at Lefferts Boulevard just after 7 p.m. and found the 37-year-old man on the roadway unconscious and unresponsive. EMS arrived at the location and pronounced him dead at the scene, police said Sunday.

He was later identified as Gregory Peterson of 115th Avenue in Jamaica.

Further investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad determined that Peterson was operating a 2024 Znen moped traveling eastbound on the Nassau Expressway approaching Lefferts Boulevard when he failed to navigate the road and struck a guardrail and was ejected. Peterson suffered severe head trauma. It has not yet been determined if he wore a helmet when he crashed, according to an NYPD spokeswoman.

The investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad remains ongoing.
