Assembly Member Nily Rozic has kept her seat representing District 25 in Tuesday’s general election. The incumbent Democrat ran against Republican newcomer Kenneth Paek, a Navy veteran and retired NYPD sergeant focused on public safety, education, and support for small business owners.
Tuesday’s race was tight; preliminary results show that Rozic clinched victory with a difference of 1,681 votes, at 49.37%, compared to Paek’s 44.06%. District 25 encompasses the neighborhoods of Flushing, Queensboro Hill, Fresh Meadows, Bayside, Oakland Gardens, and Auburndale.
The incumbent declared victory late Tuesday evening, thanking Queens voters for their ongoing support and reaffirming her commitment to her district. “I’ll always fight for our shared values – protecting our children and our healthcare, standing up against anti-Asian and antisemitic hate, fighting for an affordable future, and protecting our quality of life. Tonight, we’ll enjoy our victory, and tomorrow, we’ll be back at work delivering for Queens’ hardworking families,” Rozic said in a statement.
This year’s race appears closer than Rozic’s 2022 win of around 15 %, revealing that Paek’s law enforcement background and focus on crime and public safety have appealed to more conservative voters in the district.
Rozic has represented D25 since 2012, when she made history as the youngest woman in the state legislature and the first woman to represent the 25th District. Rozic currently chairs the Assembly’s Committee on Consumer Affairs and Protection, which works to protect consumers from fraud and discriminatory business practices, ensure data privacy, and regulate credit and pricing practices in New York.
Rozic’s focal points include fair workplace practices, pay equity, increased entrepreneurship in underserved communities, and women’s issues.
In October, Rozic’s legislation requiring certain health and casualty insurers to provide coverage for prenatal vitamins was approved. In September, Rozic’s legislation was passed to amend the labor law, requiring state-employed contractors and subcontractors to submit their payrolls or transcripts to the fiscal officer.
Rozic’s win is on trend with Queens incumbents. The latest election results indicate that all incumbents in Queens are on track to keep their seats with no changes across congressional, state Senate, or Assembly districts.
