New affordable senior housing will soon be available in downtown Jamaica.
Affordable housing developer Breaking Ground announced on Wednesday, Oct. 23, that it has officially topped off its Sutphin Senior Residence located at 97-04 Sutphin Blvd. The residential building is expected to open at the end of 2025.
Designed by Bernheimer Architecture, the Sutphin Senior Residence is Breaking Ground’s first permanent housing in Queens and the second development expected to meet Passive Housing standards. A representative from the company explained that topping off signifies that the building has reached full vertical and structural completion, with more interior work to be done.
The 15-story property will have 173 apartments reserved for low-income seniors, including 52 supportive housing units for formerly homeless older adults and 121 units for adults aged 62 years or older who earn 50% or less than the area median income.
The building is designed with entrances and corridors that promote physical activity for the senior residents and specially designed outdoor and garden spaces. Additionally, the building will include accommodations for residents with mobility challenges and a state-of-the-art,15,000 sq ft Federally Qualified Health Center operated by the Community Healthcare Network.
Amie Pospisil, chief operating officer of Breaking Ground, said that the topping off of Sutphin Senior Residence is an exciting milestone for older adults living in downtown Jamaica. “Older adults make up the fastest growing population in New York and the fastest growing age demographic falling into homelessness. Sutphin Senior Residence will not only provide much-needed affordable housing for Jamaica’s seniors, but our partnership with the Community Health Network will also create a brand-new, on-site medical clinic to provide vital health services for those in the community who are most in need,” Pospisil said.
