A Fresh Meadows teenager was killed in a crash as he rode a moped in Hollis early Monday morning.
Police from the 103rd Precinct responded to a 911 call of a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of 188th Street and 90th Avenue just after 3:30 a.m. on April 14.
Officers found the 19-year-old moped rider lying on the roadway with trauma to his head and body, and a 63-year-old female motorist with minor injuries.
EMS responded to the location and rushed the woman to NYC Health and Hospitals/Queens, where she was listed in stable condition. EMS pronounced the moped rider dead at the crash scene. He was later identified as Bereket Wood, of 188th Street near 69th Avenue, just over a mile-and-a-half north of the scene of the crash.
The NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad determined that Bereket was riding a 2023 Fengyuan Roma moped southbound on 188th Street against the flow of traffic when he struck the front of a 2012 Audi driven by the woman who was traveling northbound on 188th Street, ejecting the young man from the moped, police said Tuesday.
There have been no arrests, and the investigation remains ongoing by the NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad.
Bereket came to New York City as a young child from Ethiopia, according to his friend Kayla Rae G, who set up a GoFundMe account to help his family pay for his funeral.
“As you can imagine, the costs of laying a loved one to rest can be overwhelming,” she wrote. “His passing has left not only an emotional burden on the family but a financial one as well.”
