The Richmond Hill Library was filled with pride, poetry, and powerful reflections as the Queens Library Book Fair hosted its seventh annual celebration on April 12, honoring two exceptional women whose impact continues to shape their communities.

Captain Pratima Maldonado, the commanding officer of the NYPD’s 102nd Precinct and the highest-ranking Sikh woman in the department, and Dr. Fatima Khan, a respected rheumatologist serving Queens and Long Island, were named the 2025 Phenomenal Women.

The heartwarming event was organized and hosted by educator and community leader Dr. Dhanpaul Narine, known for his dedication to adult education, youth poetry programs, and cultural heritage outreach.

Moderated by Ms. Sabrina Fleming, Principal of Adult and Continuing Education (OACE), the celebration opened with moving tributes by youth participants, who shared personal reflections on the strength and influence of their mothers. Their heartfelt messages set a powerful tone for the day’s events, emphasizing the importance of maternal guidance and female role models.

Community support was evident throughout the afternoon, with Sherry Algredo, Chair of Queens Community Board 9, lending her voice to the honors. Her daughter, Emily, gave a touching tribute of her own, highlighting the intergenerational impact of strong, community-minded women.

Council Member Lynn Schulman, Senator Leroy Comrie, and representatives from a host of local leaders, including Senator Joseph P. Addabbo Jr., Assembly Member Jenifer Rajkumar, Congress Members Gregory Meeks and Nydia Velazquez, Assembly Member David Weprin, Borough President Donovan Richards, and Community Board 9, delivered special presentations to Captain Maldonado and Dr. Khan.

Dr. Narine presented commemorative plaques to the honorees on behalf of the Queens Library Book Fair. Both women were surrounded by family, including their proud mothers, who offered emotional tributes and words of gratitude.

“I am truly humbled to be recognized as a phenomenal woman,” said Captain Maldonado.

“This acknowledgment reinforces my commitment to empowering women and making a positive impact in our community. I share this honor with all the amazing women who have inspired me and continue to inspire others every day. Together, we can uplift and support one another in our journeys.”
