A South Jamaica man was fatally struck by two vehicles while walking with a cane in front of his apartment building on Linden Boulevard on the night of Thursday, April 24.
While lying on the street near the intersection at 166th Street, the injured 62-year-old man was struck by a second vehicle, police said Wednesday.
Police from the 113th Precinct in Jamaica responded to a 911 call of a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian at around 8:45 p.m. and found Christopher Gayton lying under the second vehicle. City Council candidate Japneet Singh captured the moment in a video he posted on his Instagram account.
“It felt so surreal witnessing a hit and run right in front of my own eyes,” he wrote. “I saw an elderly man with a cane get run over twice. It was horrific.”
EMS responded to the scene and rushed Gayton to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead the following day, police said Wednesday.
Further investigation by the NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad determined that an unidentified black vehicle driven by an unknown motorist was traveling eastbound on Linden Boulevard when it struck Gayton as he crossed the intersection.
The driver sped away from the scene just as a 2024 Ford Edge with a 49-year-old man behind the wheel was traveling eastbound on Linden Boulevard, striking Gayton for a second time. The Edge motorist stayed at the scene. There are no arrests, and the investigation remains ongoing.
