The pool became inoperable in the 1980s and the structure deteriorated to the point where it became dangerous and unsightly. It was demolished in 1997 leaving behind a concrete slab that had served as the buildings base platform.
The goal of this reconstruction project is to provide a focal point at the northwest end of Meadow Lake and strengthen the linkage between the core area of Flushing Meadows and the remaining two-thirds of the park. The pavement will be replaced with green space, and a comfort station, new lake edge deck, and concession pavilion will be constructed. The lake edge will be stabilized and planted. Lights, new benches, and a story telling area with duckling and swan sculptures will also be installed. The site will be planted with trees, shrubs, lawn and wetland lake edge planting, according to Cooper.
The pool will be replaced with a new $30 million indoor Olympic size swimming pool and ice skating complex to be built in the northeast area of the park near public transportation, it was announced last week by Mayor Rudy Giuliani in his State of the City speech.
