Elmhurst General Hospital officials reported last week that Colombian earthquake victim Jenny Amaya is "progressing nicely" and will be fitted with a prosthetic leg by the end of next week.
Hospital spokesperson Lata Vasconcellos said that Jenny has been treated by a team of pediatric rehabilitation specialists.
"Casts have been removed from her leg and arm," she said. "She has also been working with social workers and will be seen by a psychiatrist by weeks end."
Jenny lost her leg when her home in Colombia was destroyed by an earthquake. Her mother died in the disaster.
Vasconcellos said Jennys sister who escaped injury had begun attending classes in Jackson Heights where she lives with her father.
