A 21-year-old Rosedale man was shot and killed last week by a resident of a Central Islip, L.I., home the man had just burgled, Suffolk County police said.

Three male residents and one woman who was visiting were inside the home at 28 East Cedar St. in Central Islip, when two masked gunmen forced their way inside, said Detective Lt. John Gierasch, the commander of Suffolk’s Homicide Squad.

Wesley Jones, of Rosedale, and a second unidentified suspect invaded the home at 12:40 a.m. Feb. 14, striking one of the occupants on the head. The robbers seized cash and other property, Gierasch said.

At least one of the residents was armed with a shotgun and he shot Jones once in the chest, Gierasch said. Jones then dropped his gun and ran out of the house, along with his accomplice, police said.

Jones soon collapsed and died near the home, but the other suspect escaped, police said.

Gierasch said police were unsure if the suspect who escaped was armed, but several weapons were recovered at the home.

The resident who was hit on the head was treated and released from an area hospital and the other three occupants of the house were not hurt, police said.

The homicide squad is still investigating the case and at press time, no arrests had been made.

Police were asking anyone with information on this incident to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
