Former NYPD Commissioner Begins Assessment Of St. Johns Security

Residents in and around the St. Johns community have continually blasted the University for ignoring their security concerns. Some say they fear one of their children or family members might be harmed by the students returning to the campus from the local bars late at night.
These concerns hit its peak Mar. 11, when a non-student drove into a St. Johns parking lot uncontested and shot Red Storm football star Cory Mitchell in the back, paralyzing him from the waist down.
Under fire from community officials and residents, the University said it is pleased Kelly accepted the task to improve security at the school.
"I am deeply greatful that Mr. Kelly has agreed to bring his formidable expertise to bear as we undertake an objective examination of our security procedures, to assess their effectiveness and recommend changes" said St. Johns President Rev. Donald J. Harrington.
"I know he will serve the University and the students well."
