The St. Gregory’s Bantam girls volleyball team entered the season finale last Saturday at Archbishop Molloy High School. The natural, but friendly rivalry of the adjoining parishes of Floral Park’s Our Lady of the Snows and St. Gregory’s has its history across all sports and the two teams didn’t let their fans, families and onlookers down. In what could be described as a nail-biting, see-saw contest, St. Gregory’s, serving and bumping proved too much for a strong Snows showing.
Leading the charge to the championship were Nicole Bagata, Katie Paskor, Tabitha Huertas, Katie Haran, Danielle Sharkey, Teresa Sorrentino, Briann Mooney and Shannon Galvin. Both teams responded with spirit, both teams came back from a deficit to win and in the end St. Gregory’s got the neighborhood bragging rights. Parents from both teams sat together in the stands, watching the exciting game and applauding both teams as the contest drew to a close.
St. Gregory’s and Our Lady of the Snows shared good will during the athletic year in fielding a clinic for volleyball. Some 40 participants made up four teams and played six games each. This is the first time the parishes have joined together for a volleyball clinic and hopefully the kids not only enjoyed it, but learned a little of what the sport is all about. Our Lady of Snows also has a track team which St. Gregory’s younger athlete's participate in. Congratulations to all athletes in both parishes, as they prepare for the upcoming softball and baseball seasons.
