To The Point: Scouts at Troop 4-089 earn badges for project

By Sabina Cardali

Welcome to the Point. The Point being College Point. Along with St. Patrick's Day parades and celebrations and the start of spring, it was wonderful being invited to celebrations of the youth. This time it is the Silver Awards Ceremony of the Girl Scouts Troop 4-089 that belong to the North Queens 3 Service Unit. Eva Hrastnig-Mieras is the delegate.

A summary of the four Silver Awards projects of Cadette Troop 4-089 follows: Carla Hung and Samantha Kerath took charge of the Girl Scout program at College Pointís Junior Troop 4-046’s meetings for three months. This lengthy project enabled the juniors to earn four badges: Women’s Stories, Books, Theatre and First Aid. They planned and organized each weekly meeting. Carla and Samantha planned the Court of Awards ceremony where the Juniors received these badges.

Gabrielle Nussbaum and Lauren Schneiderman organized a toiletries/personal item collection for Women Helping Women, an organization that helps battered women. The girls attended the Leaders Meetings to ask for donations from more than 50 troops. They collected enough donations to make over 20 Love Boxes, which Junior Troop 4-129 helped assemble and wrap. Then Gabrielle and Lauren distributed them to the women at the nearby shelter.

Linda Saur and Sara Lizzul planned two baby showers for Bridge to Life, an organization that helps mothers-to-be choose life by providing them with counseling and needed baby items. The showers were given at Saraand Linda’s parish, Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, as well as the Leaders Meeting. Sara and Linda collected over two carloads of baby items and donated their time to sort and deliver them to Bridge to Life in College Point.

Amy Blauner and Andrea Marsala ran the Church on the Hill’s Girl Scout Camp Kaufman’s weekend for three troops — 4-089, 4-129 and 4-070. Amy and Andrea planned the GS program for the scouts to earn two Junior badges, Outdoor cook and Outdoor Surroundings. This helped the Brownies complete their Flying Up Badge criteria. They organized camp patrols and taught the Scouts how to plan a nutritious menu. Amy and Andrea ran the outdoor program, which they implemented in a fun way through games and hikes.

The Girl Scout Silver Award Ceremony took place at the Church On The Hill, Flushing. Congratulations!

Sabina Says: I hope that each and every one of you enjoyed every bit of the green for St. Patrick’s Day and are looking forward to the start of spring, although winter certainly was well-behaved and was quite mild.

May you and your families enjoy their love during Passover and Easter and may the Easter Bunny not skip your house with his goodies.
