Texas Division
Monahan & Fitzgerald’s 14, ZAB 8. Monahan’s attack was led by Michael Leonard, who drove in five runs, including three with a bases-loaded triple, and also played excellent defense. Andrew Schindler went 2- for-3 and drove in two runs with a huge double. Zachary Haskowitz chipped in with a hit and two RBIs. Monahan’s pitchers threw extremely well, striking out 11 batters. ZAB was led by Andrew Segretto, who had a big single, and Chris Cruz, who threw three very good innings, as well as making a very good defensive play at third base late in the game.
Prava Construction 8, ZAB 6. Prava Construction was victorious over ZAB in a back-and-forth battle. Michael Marden hit two home runs and John Aponte had a great pitching performance and also added a home run to lead Prava Construction. Kyle Bremer provided stellar defense as well in the win.
Dr. Kim’s Tin Grins 10, Applebee’s Bayside 5. With opening day temperature at 40 degrees, John Paul Koulotoutos pitched three innings of no-hit ball, hit a double, triple and a home run for Dr. Kim’s. Barry Porzungolo scored three runs with Greg Stathopouls getting the team’s first hit in the win.
Outback Steak House 10, Papazzio’s Restaurant 2. Brian Wren of Papazzio’s Restaurant had two hits, including an RBI triple and pitching the last inning of the game. Daniel Smith was solid in the field with some excellent play at third base and was on base in both of his plate appearances. Nicholas Ziangas scored the first Papazzio run and was on base two times in the game.
Biordi Construction 3, Dr. Kim's Tin Grin’s 2. Tommy Karcinski hit a solo home run that proved to be the difference in this well-played Texas Division thriller. Starting pitcher Frankie Biordi pitched three solid innings along with Karcinski (three innings in relief) for the win. Nicky Burns made a great catch at second base to preserve the win in the last inning for Biordi. Dr Kim’s had some terrific plays made in the field that could have gone either way. James Caffrey had two hits, Christopher Jimenez got on base twice and Ryan Mcgee pitched three incredible inning for the first time ever playing organized ball.
PeeWee Division
A&G Water Filter vs. Anna Maria’s Bagels. The PeeWee season got off with a bang as A&G’s bat’s exploded with two monster hits each from sluggers Danny LaRusso and Jessie O’Grady. Anna Marie’s was led by the hitting of Jennifer Kopp and Azmeer Kazmi, the fine fielding of third baseman Brandon Khan and the overall play and presence of Michali Katz.
MTM Carpentry vs. Padavan’s Paragons. John Quinn led the hit parade off for MTM. Everyone got in on the action for Padavan’s, especially, Matthew Szokoli and John McGee, who each blasted two big hits.
Prava Construction vs. Il Fresco. Prava Construction got off to a flying start with the slick fielding of Drew Palmer and the timely hitting of Zack Gerhardt. Everyone on Il Fresco had two big hits in this terrific contest.
Tiger Schulmann Karate vs. Hollis Court Collision. Hollis Court started the season off right with every player chipping in with big hits. Tiger Shulmann was led by first baseman Tyler Reilly, who provided some gold glove defense and stroked two solid line drives. Ari Petankas also flashed some fine leather at shortstop, in addition in stroking two hits.
Mensch Lumber vs. Philmar Machine. Lefty slugger Dan Widasky stroked a couple of frozen for Mensch. His teammates, Jonathan Rosoff and Daniel Shannon, were also impressive at the plate. Each player on Philmar smashed two hits in an extremely impressive offensive debut.
Junior Division
Murphy’s Florist 9, Applebee’s 2. In his first start of the year, Joe Bruno combined with Joe O'Connor to pitch a three-hitter, as Murphy’s Florist defeated Applebee’s. Michael Benome made a spectacular shoestring catch in left field and Paul Savino had several defensive gems playing a flawless second base to go along with his two steals. Jason Kilcheski, Kevin O’Connor and Michael Gold all helped out on offense and Phil Varsam looked good in his first start behind the plate. For Applebee’s, Tim Doepfner pitched brilliantly and David Marrero was 2-for-3 and made several key putouts in the field.
Murphy’s Florist 8, Iannece Law 7. Going into the last inning on Friday, Murphy’s was trailing, 7-3, but with two outs and nobody on, the bats suddenly woke up. Six hits and one walk later, Murphy’s celebrated an 8-7 victory over Iannece Law. Philip Varsam, Joe Bruno and Chris Catalanotto had two hits each. Matt Becce, Paul Kim and Joe Catalanotto led the defense. Matt Bruno’s fine pitching held Iannece to three hits in his first start of the year. For Iannece, Keith Caparelli played a solid first base and Robert LaRusso called a fine game behind the plate.
