The Association for the Advancement of the Blind and Retarded in Queens is planning to dedicate its newest day treatment and habilitation center in downtown Jamaica Saturday.
The AABR is moving into Wellington Hall, located at 161-06 89th Ave. in Jamaica, which will be used to hold programs that provide people with disabilities opportunities to participate in community life, both inside and outside the facility.
The Wellington Hall facility will be the center for AABR’s Community Give Back Program, which helps bind, autistic and developmentally disabled re-enter the community through volunteer work. Individuals who meet or exceed treatment programs can be trained to assist in delivering meals to the elderly, serving at soup kitchens, running thrift stores and more. The volunteers are supervised by AABR staff.
AABR, based in College Point, has been providing education and training for people who are blind, autistic or developmentally disabled since 1956. The Community Give Back Program was founded in 1998.
The dedication will be held Saturday, Oct. 19, at Wellington Hall. Tours will be available starting at noon, and the dedication ceremony is scheduled for 1 p.m.
