Welcome to the Point. The Point being College Point. Spring finally came around the corner and we could feel the difference, and it is delightful.
Congratulations to Brian Pupplo, who made Hunter Junior High School, and to Daniel Pupplo, who was accepted by Binghamton College. Happy birthday to Pat Coffey. Congratulations to Matilda Fenchak, who bowled 211 at Whitestone Lanes. Happy birthday to Cathleen King.
The Queens Centers for Progress (formerly United Cerebral Palsy of Queens) sponsored an evening at Terrace on the Park honoring Sen. Frank Padavan (R-Bellerose), honorary chairwoman Queens Borough President Helen Marshall and Chef of the Year Georgiana Reese, first vice president of N.Y. Community Bank.
The event featured Commissioner and Mrs. Joel Miele’s special family recipe, Queens County Clerk Gloria D’Amico’s eggplant and Joe Previte’s linguine with clam sauce.
The following restaurants participated: Anthony’s Restaurant, Marretta’s Bakery, Sarah Brown Caterers, Papazzio Restaurant, India Corner, Emiles Candies, Gebhardt’s Restaurant, Nick & Maggies Steak House, Kaieteur Restaurant, London Lennies, Luigi’s Restaurant, Aphrodite’s Sweets and Tricana Imports.
Boy Scout Troop 20 had a wonderful pancake breakfast at the First Reformed Church of College Point, its sponsor.
Girl Scout Sunday was celebrated at the First Reformed Church of College Point, with Eva Hrastnig-Mieras, delegate of NQ III Service Unit. They celebrated the 91st anniversary of Girl Scouting in this country due to the efforts of founder Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low.
Girl Scouts have been meeting in this church since 1933. There are 45 troops and 715 Girl Scouts. If and when the service unit achieves all of its goals, members receive the President’s Award at the council’s annual meeting the following year in May.
This service unit was awarded this honor for the years 1997, 1998 and 1999-2000. Junior Troop 4046 leaders are Dorothy Schneider and Lois Demonte. Cadette Troop 4946 leaders are Denis Fox and Dorothy Schneider. Daisy Troop 4-574, formerly at First Reformed Church, still has two honorary Daisies — Betty Pegen and me. I did sing the “Daisy Song.”
A bake sale will be held at the First Reformed Church, 118-01 14th Ave., on March 30, at 11 a.m. in the chapel. There will be treats and goodies for everyone’s taste. On April 2 look for the Spring Luncheon at the First Reformed Church (lots of goodies).
There will be a free Anti-Terrorism Awareness Program presented by Lt. John Rowland at the Poppenhusen Institute on Tuesday, April 8, at 7 p.m. Go to learn some facts that will help keep you alert but not in a constant state of fear.
Spring Fest will feature dances, music and stories from around the world. This free multicultural experience will be at the Poppenhusen Institute, at 114-04 14th Rd., and will include Indian, Chinese and Israeli dances. The audience will be welcome to join in, Saturday, March 29, 7:30 p.m. Call 718-358-0067 for more information.
The 25th Annual Queens-Half Marathon and the Skaggs-Walsh 5K Run will be on Saturday, May 17. The race will start at 121st Street on Poppenhusen Avenue (McNeil Park) at 8 a.m.
Please leave your car home from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., as there will be traffic delays and rerouting. Look for the freshly painted blue line on the race course. Sixth Avenue to 25th Avenue on College Point Boulevard will be closed from 8 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. for the Skaggs-Walsh 5K Run.
