Police Blotter: Man claiming chest pains dies after dispute at Queens Hospital

JAMAICA – A 51-year-old man who walked into Queens Hospital Center complaining of chest pains Tuesday morning and then had to be subdued after getting into a dispute with the hospital staff died less than two hours later in the emergecny room, police said.

An investigation was underway, and the medical examiner was to determine what caused the man to die.

60-year-old found dead in Jamaica residence

JAMAICA – A 60-year-old man was found dead in his bed at his 88-22 Parsons Blvd. residence Feb. 11, police said.

There were no signs of criminality and the medical examiner was to determine the cause of death, police said.

The investigation was ongoing.

Mother, baby reported missing later found safe in the Bronx

JACKSON HEIGHTS – A statewide Amber Alert was issued for a missing baby and her mother the night of Feb. 11, but the two were later found unharmed in the Bronx, police said.

Police issued the alert after the Jackson Heights family of the mother, 24-year-old Carla Vilela of Kissimmee, Fla., reported that she and her daughter, 14-month-old Carolina Vilela, had been abducted by the mother’s common-law husband, police said.

The two were last seen getting into a minivan with Jesus Maldonado, 33, also of Kissimmee, police said.

The three were later found in the Bronx and Maldonado turned himself in to police without incident, police said. The baby was treated and released from Elmhurst Hospital.

No criminality was suspected in the incident, police said. Published reports said the woman’s family had falsely reported the abduction after she went willingly with Maldonado, who had a criminal record.

Man shot in abdomen in Forest Hills robbery

FOREST HILLS – A 30-year-old man was shot in the stomach Monday night when three Hispanic men robbed him near 70th Avenue and Queens Boulevard, police said.

The victim was taken to Elmhurst Hospital in stable condition, police said. No arrests have been made in the ongoing investigation.

Rikers Island officer charged with assault

BRONX — A corrections officer for Rikers Island was arrested on charges of assault Sunday inside of PSA 7, which houses police officers at its location at 737 Melrose Ave., police said.

The arrested man, identified by police as Joseph Sanabria, 37, was assigned to the intelligence unit at Rikers.

Two die in car crash in the Rockaways

SEASIDE – Two men died after their car crashed into a school at Beach Channel Drive and Beach 104th Street Sunday morning, police said.

Police said the driver, identified as Brian Baxter, 23, of 12 Columbia Ave. in Far Rockaway died at the scene of the accident. His passenger, identified as Christopher Humel, 23, of 4 Wilson St. in Far Rockaway was brought to Peninsula Hospital, where he died several hours later, police said.

Woman seriously injured in carjacking in Maspeth

MASPETH – A 71-year-old woman was in serious condition with severe head trauma at Elmhurst Hospital after she was carjacked Tuesday night, police said.

The woman, who was not identified by police, was pulled from her Dodge Spirit at the corner of 55th Avenue and 69th Street and thrown to the ground by a man with blond hair thought to be in his 20s, police said.

The suspect, who was wearing a gray sweatshirt, fled in the car, police said. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing, police said.

Two armed men charged in Queensbridge robbery

QUEENSBRIDGE – Two men suspected of robbing a group of people inside a building near 40th Avenue and 10th Street were arrested early Saturday morning, police said.

Police said officers heard a shot fired from within the building. When they approached, a man wearing a ski mask, identified by police as Timothy Forman, 28, came out of the building. He was followed by a man identified by police as Herbert Callahan, 32 of 1525 Townsend Ave. in the Bronx.

Callahan had a 9mm handgun and a bag containing cash, jewelry, wallets and cellphones, police said.

Both men were charged with robbery, possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and possession of stolen property, police said.

One of the robbery victims, identified by police as John Holmes, 41, of 1-20 Astoria Blvd., was found to be in possession of cocaine and was also arrested, police said.

Police arrest man, 16-year-old in No. 7, Sunnyside robberies

LONG ISLAND CITY – Police arrested Saturday the second member of a pair wanted for a robbery on the No. 7 train at Queens Boro Plaza Station and a robbery at Queens Boulevard and 33rd Street in Sunnyside, police said.

The man, identified by police as Ivan Vidal, 32, of 466 East 6th St. in Manhattan, was arrested in the East Village. Police said he and Digna Pujols, 16, who had been arrested a week earlier, were allegedly responsible for a series of robberies in Manhattan in addition to the two in Queens.

Both of the Queens robberies took place in December, and the suspects used a black handgun each time, although no shots were fired, police said.

Would-be Citibank robber flees Astoria bank with empty hands

ASTORIA – A would-be robber who passed a note to a teller at a bank last Wednesday afternoon demanding money fled before he received any cash, police said.

Police said no arrests have been made in the incident at the Citibank at 25-91 Steinway St., and the investigation was continuing. The suspect is a 25- to 30-year-old man, police said.
