Police Blotter: Burglary incidents drop after recent arrests at 111th

BAYSIDE – The arrests of 20 burglary suspects in Queens since Feb. 25 has led to a reduction in burglaries in the 111th Precinct and elsewhere, the precinct’s commanding officer said Monday.

Capt. Thomas Pilkington said the 111th, which covers Bayside, Douglaston, Little Neck, Oakland Gardens and part of Auburndale, was averaging about 15 burglaries a week this year.

With these arrests, the number of burglaries has dropped to seven in each of the last two weeks, Pilkington said.

“It’s having a direct impact on the number of burglaries taking place in the 111th,” said Pilkington, as well as in police precincts in Fresh Meadows, Long Island City, Flushing, Ozone Park and Jackson Heights.

Firefighter arrested in Bayside on DWI charge

BAYSIDE — A firefighter assigned to a Harlem station was arrested on drunk driving charges after he allegedly rolled through a stop sign in Bayside early Sunday, police said.

Joseph Canale, 37, allegedly drove through the intersection at 39th Avenue and 210th Street in Bayside about 1:10 a.m. Sunday and was stopped by an officer, police said. Canale was charged with driving while intoxicated and failure to stop at a stop sign, police said.

Hospital cop charged with sodomy in Elmhurst

ELMHURST — A hospital police officer was arrested Friday and charged with sodomy, police said.

Russell Chapman, 43, was charged with sodomizing a victim who he knew, but it was unclear what their relationship was, police said. Chapman was arrested at an undisclosed address within the 110th Precinct, which has its headquarters in Elmhurst.

17-year-old arrested in LIC on robbery charge

LONG ISLAND CITY — A 17-year-old male was arrested last Thursday in connection with a robbery last month at the 21st Street and 41st Avenue station of the F line, police said.

Kyle Williams, of 41-07 12th St., allegedly approached a 25-year-old woman on Feb. 9 and took personal items from her, police said. The woman fell and struck her head, but was treated and released from Astoria General Hospital.

Williams was charged with robbery, although information on the items he allegedly stole was unavailable, police said.

19-year-old man charged with assaulting infant son

RIDGEWOOD — A 19-year-old man was arrested and charged Wednesday morning with assaulting his 3-month-old son, police said.

Victor Fuentes, 19, was charged after police responded to a call and found the 3-month-old boy unconscious, police said. The boy was taken to Wyckoff Medical Center, where doctors found fractured ribs and internal bleeding. The infant was in critical condition, police said.

Glendale woman charged with DWI, hit-and-run

GLENDALE — A 24-year-old Glendale woman was arrested on drunk driving and hit-and-run charges after she rear-ended a car at the intersection of Myrtle Avenue and Union Turnpike, police said.

Azeneth Cordova, of 88-61 81st Rd. was driving west on Myrtle Avenue about 11 p.m. Monday when she attempted to make a left onto Union Turnpike, police said. Cordova struck a Nissan Altima, pushing it into a pole, police said. The front passengers in the Altima were treated at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in stable condition, while the rear passenger was listed in critical condition with head and internal injuries, police said.

Cordova, who allegedly fled the scene, was arrested a short distance away, police said.

Flushing man charged with assault, obstruction

JACKSON HEIGHTS — A Flushing man was arrested on assault charges last Thursday after he allegedly tried to drive away as a traffic enforcement agent was writing him a parking ticket, hitting the officer, police said.

Mohammad Islam, 28, allegedly drove over a traffic agent’s foot as he tried to pull away from 72-30 37th Ave in Jackson Heights at 7:30 p.m. last Thursday, police said. Islam was charged with assault and obstructing governmental administration.

Jackson Hts. man dies after pipe bashing to head

JACKSON HEIGHTS — A 21-year-old Jackson Heights man died at Elmhurst Hospital Center Monday morning after being bashed in the head with a pipe as he stood at the intersection of Broadway and 74th Street, police said.

Carlos Pesantez, of 34-59 89th St., was pronounced dead on arrival at Elmhurst at 3:50 a.m., police said. An Elmhurst Hospital spokeswoman confirmed that the man was dead on arrival.

Pesantez was attacked in an area frequented by transvestites, but a police spokesman said he was not dressed in drag.

Police are continuing to investigate.

Man found dead on LIC street

LONG ISLAND CITY — A 56-year-old man was found dead in the street on 26th Avenue and 4th Street Tuesday, police said.

Veto Pampinella of Long Island City was discovered lying face down in the street with trauma to the head at about 7:30 p.m., police said.

An investigation was ongoing, and the medical examiner had yet to determine the cause of death.

Laurelton man arrested after fatally shooting one, wounding another

LAURELTON — A Laurelton man was arrested Saturday on charges he killed a 27-year-old man and shot an 18-year-old man, police said.

The shooting took place during a dispute just after 2 a.m. Saturday at the corner of 138th Avenue and 226th Street in Laurelton, police said.

The 27-year-old was shot in the face and pronounced dead on the scene, and the 18-year-old was shot in the thigh and was in stable condition, police said. The victims were not identified.

Derrick McCarthy, 27, of 135-12 226th St. was arrested and charged in the shooting, police said.

Woman, child found dead in Rockaway apartment

ROCKAWAYS — A 51-year-old woman and a 3-year-old boy were found dead inside an apartment at 20-30 Seagirt Blvd. in the Rockaways Tuesday morning, police said.

The pair was found about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. The woman was about to give the boy a bath when she had a heart attack and collapsed on the boy, crushing him, police said.

Qns. Village corrections officer charged after dispute

QUEENS VILLAGE — A Corrections Department officer was arrested within the 105th Precinct, headquartered in Queens Village, on assault charges following a domestic dispute, police said.

Colleen Ellis-Gammon, 38, was arrested at 7:50 a.m. Monday, but the circumstances surrounding the incident were unavailable, police said. The location of her arrest was not released.

Hollis girl dies suddenly after medical exam at hospital

JAMAICA — A 9-year-old Hollis girl died Monday night after she fell unconscious following an exam at Queens Hospital Center in Jamaica, police said.

Odinakachu Ezewugo, of 118-05 201st Place, was pronounced dead just before 10 p.m. Monday, police said. There was no sign of trauma, and the medical examiner was to determine her cause of death.

The state Health Department was also investigating her death.

24-year-old hit by car on Lefferts Boulevards

SOUTH OZONE PARK — A 24-year-old man was in critical condition Sunday after he was struck by a car at the Lefferts Boulevard exit of the Nassau Expressway, police said.

The man, who was not identified, was standing outside his vehicle about 10 p.m. Sunday when he was hit, police said. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan with severe leg injuries. No arrests were made and the investigation was continuing, police said.
