United Spinal Mets Finish Second

The United Spinal Association Mets, a Division 1 Wheelchair softball team, co-sponsored by the New York Mets and the Association, came in second place in the 4th Major League Wheelchair Softball Tournament. The event took place this past weekend at the Shea Stadium parking lot.
The United Spinal Mets advanced to the championship game after defeating the Magee Phillies (co-sponsored by the Philadelphia Phillies) 8-1 and the Vaughn White Sox (co-sponsored by the Chicago White Sox) 9-3. However, their two-game winning streak was broken by the RIC Cubs (co-sponsored by the Chicago Cubs) in an offensive battle, 10-6. The RIC Cubs also defeated the United Spinal Mets in the championship game on Saturday, 8-0.
"Losing to the Cubs is disappointing," said second baseman and team captain Victor Calise. "The bats didnt come through but were just going to suck it up and come back next year."
Although they fell short, the United Spinal Mets still played inspired ball. The team MVP award went to outfielder Jim Leatherman; the Sportsmanship Award went to catcher Darrin Kinnes; Best Quad Award was given to Catcher George Taborsky. Fernando Garcia also took home two awards, winning the long ball competition and the centerfield award.
