The Health & Job Expo organized by The Queens Courier, El Correo de Queens and HealthWise Magazine was nothing short of a complete success. The event was also sponsored by The New Parkway Hospital and Parker Jewish Institute.
Benedicta Caraballo was one of the hundreds of people who attended and enjoyed the Expo. She got there very early with her son Anthony and her friend Elba and took advantage of all the free medical displays and services available — including tests for high blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol.
Caraballo also utilized the services available in relation for the Job Expo, new this year to the event.
Ronnie Scanlon, a registered nurse of the New York Hospital Queens declared that for her the fair had a great turnout.
NYHQ administered more than one hundred free medical tests.
Scanlon’s partner Nancy Depowski, an RN, said, “We did some health training and emphasized with patients the importance of regular visits to the doctor, a balanced diet, exercise. We even answered any questions the patients may have had.”
Alex Diaz, outreach coordinator of The New Parkway Hospital described his experience as very positive.
“We counted from 150 to 200 people who took medical tests, out of which almost 30% had abnormal outcomes and had to have follow-up medical treatments.”
Queens Counseling Services performed a memory test and stress-level test and offered their services in psychotherapy, pastoral or mental health counseling with qualified staff that can understand Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Polish and French.
Eleven health care professionals gave seminars throughout the day.
Ron Curry of the HMO Well Care said of the fair, “It was great. This is good exposure. We received over a hundred registrations and many of them indicated that they are interested in our programs, which include Medicare, Medicaid, Family Health Plus and Child Health Plus.”
