U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-Jackson Heights) has secured $75,000 in federal funds to install 12 security cameras at three intersections along Queens Boulevard in Sunnyside to act as a crime prevention tool and to assist police investigations of area crimes.
Four cameras will be installed along Queens Boulevard at the intersections of 40th Street, 43rd Street and 46th Street, Crowley said. Two cameras will be placed on either side of the street at all three locations, he said.
The installation follows on the heels of a Nov. 24 shooting at the New Post Coffee Shop at Queens Boulevard and 40th Street, for which there have been no arrests made. Elected officials said the cameras, which are set to be installed by early February, will prevent crimes like that shooting from happening and will provide visual evidence for police investigations.
These cameras are not just to assist in helping catch perpetrators of crimes, but also to deter those crimes from happening in the first place, Crowley said. Its a way to help residents feel safer in their neighborhoods.
