Legal clinic on housing problems

Queens residents facing housing problems will be offered a legal clinic to help resolve their problems, Councilmember John Liu announced. The workshop will deal with problems of evictions, over-charging of rents, failure to repair, illegal subdivisions, renting from co-op boards, public housing, Section 8, and homeless services. Translations will also be provided.
The information-packed afternoon will take place on Friday, August 11 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Liu's Community Office, located at 135-27 38th Avenue, Suite 388, in Flushing.
&#8220Affordable housing is the key to ensuring long-term prosperity in our community and we must do everything possible to ensure that all New Yorkers have equal access to affordable and quality housing,” Liu said. &#8220We look forward to hosting this important legal clinic in collaboration with the Legal Aid Society.”
This one-day clinic, organized in collaboration with the Legal Aid Society, will feature 15-minute one-on-one consultations with experienced housing lawyers. While the clinic is free and open to the public, seating is limited and must be scheduled in advance by calling 718-888-8747. Residents will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis.
&#8220This collaboration will provide the community with access to justice. We continue to face an affordable housing crisis and this clinic in particular will offer important new legal services to secure a home in our community,” said April Newbauer, Attorney-in-Charge of the Queens Civil Practice of the Legal Aid Society. &#8220The Legal Aid Society is proud to co-sponsor this initiative with Liu and we applaud his efforts for making this event possible.”
