Ellen Young, who is running for the vacant State Assembly seat in the 22nd District, recently visited the Prince Street Senior Center, a major senior center in Downtown Flushing. As the center's members sat down to lunch, she explained her stance on issues affecting elder citizens such as funding for senior-oriented social services and Medicaid/Medicare Part D, the new prescription drug plan.
“We need to reform Medicare and Medicaid so seniors can get more funds for their medication,” Young said. “We must also ensure that our hospitals are not closed down; instead, we want to strengthen our hospitals.”
Access to adequate healthcare is a key issue Young will address as an Assemblymember, especially healthcare for seniors who often must decide between buying their medication and paying their rent.
For the last 27 years, Young has been deeply involved in the life of her community, serving as Queens' first Asian female auxiliary officer and coordinating countless voter registration drives in addition the five years she served as the top aide to Councilmember John Liu.
