The Flushing Manor School, P.S. 184 in Whitestone, will be raising funds for Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a Lee Denim Day/Passionately Pink Day, sponsored by the Susan G. Coleman Breast Cancer Organization.
“We're excited about it,” said principal Dora Pantelis. “It obviously has an impact our staff and larger school community, and we had the interest of a new staff member.
I want to say she's done a fabulous job organizing it.”
All students will wear pink or denim on Wednesday, October 18 to show support for those who have developed the disease. The event is being organized by Pamela Marksheid, a teacher at the school. For years, she's been in charge of Denim Day at P.S. 32 in Flushing, where she runs the student council.
Marksheid, who teaches science at P.S. 184, is also raising money for the organization by collecting donations from teachers and students. Each person who makes a donation will be given a certificate of acknowledgement. At P.S. 32, she raised up to $500 one year and $300 in another.
The Susan G. Coleman Breast Cancer Organization has sent Marksheid pins commemorating the day of support. Letters have been sent out to the parents of each child to make sure they wear either denim or pink clothing.
