Looking to make a few new friends?
Then go to the Friends of Maple Grove Membership Recruitment Drive on Sunday, June 10. It will take place in the cemetery, at 83-15 Kew Gardens Road, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The event of the newly created Friends of Maple Grove Cemetery, Inc. will be a day of fun and community involvement, as well as a day to enlighten the public about this new organization, according to coordinator Carol Lacks.
Activities will include two art workshops entitled “I am a Friend,” which will be conducted by Karen Fitzgerald, artist-in-residence at P.S. 99Q. Each workshop will end with musical entertainment. After the first, keyboardist Bill Wismewski will play a classical selection and a selection of music by artists and lyricists that have been interred at Maple Grove. The second workshop will end with Patricia Blackman Dunn and Koaki Shinkai playing classical flute duets.
A writing reflection area will also be open to allow attendees to rest and enjoy the surrounding scenery of Maple Grove.
Later, there will be a self-guided Spirit Walk. Those who participate can stop at various points of interest, including the 9/11 Remembrance Garden and the Angel Mary statue. The Spirit Walk ends with Wishing Well Way, where visitors can place a wish or blessing in the Blessings Box.
In conjunction with the recruitment drive, Friends of Maple Grove Cemetery, Inc., which began in 2006, will also be sponsoring activities that will take place during the June 10 Kew Gardens Spring into Summer Community Day, which will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on parts of Lefferts Boulevard, Austin Street, and Metropolitan Avenue.
