Former SJU star takes over at Adelphi

Carlo Acquista was named the fourth head coach in 40 years of men’s soccer at Adelphi University last week, replacing Bob Montgomery. The former St. John’s University star, who won a national title in 1996 and helped the Red Storm to two Big East crowns, leaves St. Francis College.
“I’m extremely excited about the opportunity that Adelphi University and Athletic Director Robert Hartwell has given me,” Acquista said of taking over for Montgomery, who went 258-224-39 over 29 seasons and qualified for seven NCAA Tournaments berths including the final one last fall. “We are going to work extremely hard to uphold the tradition that Bob Montgomery has built at Adelphi over the past 30 years.”
Before taking over at St. Francis, where he was 18-57-10 over the last five years, including an 8-9-1 mark in 2004, the Whitestone resident served as an assistant coach at Hofstra University and a volunteer assistant at his alma mater. He is also the director of coaching at the Metropolitan Oval and is a Holy Cross High School alum.
“We are pleased that Carlo showed an interest and was available and has agreed to take the job. He has done an extremely good job at St. Francis in his recruitment, coaching and administrating,” Athletic Director Robert Hartwell said. “I feel he will maintain our level of success and we are proud to have him replace such a legend as Bob Montgomery.”
