After losing their first two games, the College Point Stars may not win the Babe Ruth World Series for the Cal Ripken Major 70 Division in Aberdeen, Maryland. However, just being included in the event, which features the ten best 12-year-old teams across the country and six other international clubs, is noteworthy in and of itself.
“It’s a big accomplishment,” Manager Nelson Santiago said of qualifying. “We have a lot of good talent on this team. After we won our district, I thought we could go far.”
College Point made it to the World Series by winning the Mid-Atlantic Regional. Among other activities, the northeastern Queens stars got a chance to meet with Hall of Fame shortstop Cal Ripken, who signed autographs and talked baseball with them.
“They like the experience; it just hasn’t been good with the winning right now,” Santiago said.
In their first game, a heartbreaking 6-5 loss to Tampa, FL, Adrian Castano went 3-for-3 with two RBIs including a homerun and a double, Osvaldo Avalle drove in two more runs with a double, and Matthew Caposio, Stephen Alemais and Phoenix DesChamps each scored a run.
Caposio allowed just three earned runs in six innings of work while striking out five, but Bryan Torres allowed the go-ahead run to cross with two outs in the bottom of the eighth.
College Point did not fare nearly as well in their second game, dropping a 15-1 decision to Lexington, KY. Six different pitchers toed the rubber, all allowing at least a run except for DesChamps. Chris Piteo and DesChamps were the lone Stars to record a hit.
