Gerry Weitzen has heard the whispers that undefeated John Adams is too good for the Cup Division. He could care less.
The Spartans coach, in his 12th year at the helm, has made the playoffs just once, and won just a single game the last two years. The only sensible decision was to move down, no matter how dominant they have been in the PSAL’s lowest level.
“The last couple of years we’ve been playing over our heads and we were getting killed,” Weitzen said. “Look at our record the last two years - we’re 1-17. Where should we be? I’d like to win some games once in a while.”
Weitzen is certainly getting that this fall. The Spartans improved to 6-0 Saturday, blasting Lafayette, 60-0. Running backs Darren Baker, Kevin Patterson, and Willie Beauford each ran for two touchdowns and combined with a few others to rack up 331 yards on the ground. Ariel Medrano made 12 tackles, three for losses, registered three sacks and recovered a fumble to lead the defense.
“I’ve had this backfield for three years and the line is brand new,” Weitzen said. “The kids are just starting to mature. I thought they would learn and grow, and they have.”
August Martin is tied with Campus Magnet for the best Bowl Division record in Queens by shutting out Jamaica, 12-0. Thomas Greyer registered a team-high 14 tackles, returned a fumble for a touchdown and made a 30-yard field goal. Phillip Devore, Rasean Roundtree, Ndubuez Ezeigwe, Kevin Shim, and Andrew Richards each had a sack in the 4-2 Falcons’ second straight shutout.
Elsewhere, Bayside was routed by JFK, 32-13. Dwayne Brown returned a fumble for a touchdown and Damir Durkanovic rushed for a score. LIC improved to 3-3 with a 14-6 win over Evander Childs; Far Rockaway fell to 2-4 after dropping a 14-8 overtime decision to Truman; and Beach Channel moved to 2-4 after winning courtesy George Washington’s forfeit.
In Cup Division play, Flushing moved to 4-2 after knocking off Alfred E. Smith, 23-12. Quarterback Deon Frazier tossed three touchdown passes to Rumeal Williamson. William Bryant (5-1) won their second straight, whipping Adlai Stevenson, 41-8, behind Darro Clarke’s four touchdowns runs. Info Tech lost to Stuyvesant, 25-0, and Springfield Gardens was upended by South Bronx, 28-16, to drop their record to 1-5.
In the Catholic League, Holy Cross won its fourth in a row, blanking Bishop Ford, 16-0, in Brooklyn. Daryl Whiting scored a touchdown for the fourth straight week and Barrington Wallace scored from a yard out for the 4-2 Knights.
In addition, St. Francis Prep (5-1) bounced back from their first loss of the season, getting by Kellenberg, 41-20, and Christ the King (0-6) remained winless, falling to Xavier, 49-28.
