While some lucky high school relationships are able to cast off and set sail, many others end shipwrecked. It seems that many kids in my high school are treading in dangerous waters in their relationships. Nevertheless, its only high school right? How serious can it be?
I could rant for hours about kids my age and this whimsical thing we call dating and lust-at-first sight. If you ask me, much of high school dating is a bit excessive. We are only teenagers! We cannot even vote yet!
But many teens at my high school have already said “I love you” to their “serious” boyfriends of all of two months and many have spent countless nights crying over the comment their boyfriend left on another girl’s Facebook page. All of this dating drama makes one pause to wonder if having a boyfriend/girlfriend in high school is even worth it.
Many girls want a boyfriend, so they pick a guy to like.
The relationship begins with the text messaging and the cyber-sweet nothings that never really amount to anything. “I love you” is said too early on.
Many in high school are too in love with the idea of being in love than they are actually in love with the qualities of the other person. On top of that, some people change for their boyfriend or girlfriend because they think that is how they are supposed to act in a relationship.
Then the jealousy and the mind games begin. Every other day it is another end-of-the-world fight and when a couple does finally break up, the girl may be left broken hearted, bitter, and vengeful because she gave the boy something she can never get back, and the boy moves on, making his ex-girlfriend feel used and worthless.
Do not get me wrong, I have nothing against dating in high school. If taken with an open mind, a light heart, and a strong sense of morals, I think dating can be great fun.
I just think that, maybe, sometimes, dating in high school is taken a little too seriously a little too fast. A boyfriend or girlfriend should not add to the stress in your life, they should take the stress away! So to all you girls out there - be yourself, be picky, and never settle! Moreover, to all you guys - do not try to play the field, do not lead her on, and yes, I am single!
