Cardozo has owned the borough from a track & field standpoint in recent years. Cross-country was never their forte. Allison Lee and Claudia Francis changed that.
The two long-distance runners finished first and second, respectively, at 19:32.29 and 19:47.82 in the PSAL cross country city championships at Van Cortlandt Park in Riverdale last Saturday afternoon. In the individual 5K competition, Newtown’s Stephany Fana took home second-place honors with a time of 21:12.20. For the boys, Grover Cleveland’s Rafael Ksepka was second in the 5K team run at 16:53.23.
In the CHSAA intersectional cross-country championships, Karen Roa of St. Francis Prep captured the 2.5-mile run crown at 16:08.50.
Lewis, Cardozo advance to quarterfinals
The top two seeds in the PSAL volleyball playoffs — Francis Lewis and Cardozo — are on to the PSAL quarterfinals after easy second-round wins. The top-seeded Patriots bounced No. 16 Susan Wagner, 25-13, 25-12, behind 14 kills, two blocks and four aces from outside hitter Alicia Pawelec. Setter Jen Dortch added 20 assists and Jillian Escobar added 10 service points for Lewis, who meets No. 9 Curtis next.
No. 2 Cardozo, meanwhile, blanked No. 15 Lehman, 25-14, 25-10. Outside hitter Mallory Grubler led the way with 14 kills, Christine Lueckbe chipped in with six kills, five digs and five service points and Darim Choi had 19 assists. The Judges will take on seventh-seeded McKee/Vocational Tech.
