By Alex Christodoulides

The precinct covers the communities of Fresh Meadows, Briarwood, Hillcrest, Jamaica Estates, Holliswood and Kew Gardens Hills. The most recent homicide victim of 2007 was Shahida Sultanna, 32, allegedly stabbed to death by her husband, Mohammad Solaiman, Dec. 22 in their Cedarcroft Road apartment in Jamaica Estates, police said. Solaiman was charged that same day with murder, criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child (the couple's daughter was in the apartment at the time of the stabbing), according to police. Authorities said the daughter had been released into the custody of an aunt.During a 10-day period in July, police from the 107th Precinct responded to two homicides, one in the Pomonok Houses and the other in the neighboring Electchester Village. Brian Paige, 26, was shot and killed in front of a friend's building in the Pomonok complex July 17, and the investigation is ongoing. Michael Anthony, 26, allegedly beat his mother, 61-year-old Maria Fischbach, to death using a barbell in their Electchester apartment July 28, and was charged that night with second-degree murder and assault. Anthony is awaiting trial. For the week ending Dec. 16 burglary reports rose to 423 in 2007, up from 415 for the same period in 2006, about a 2 percent jump, according to authorities. The figure is still lower than the full-year total of 431 burglaries in 2006, according to CompStat figures for the 107th Precinct. The year-to-date figures for the precinct through Dec. 16 reflect a downward trend in crime overall, with 17 rapes (there were 18 in all of 2006), 286 robberies (down from 327 through all of the previous year), 95 felonious assaults (compared to 120 in all of 2006), 603 grand larceny reports (a drop from the 693 in the previous calendar year) and 272 car thefts through mid-December (the precinct reported 398 through the end of 2006), making for an 11.52 percent drop in complaints in the 107th through mid-December compared to the same period in 2006.Reach reporter Alex Christodoulides by e-mail at news@timesledger.com or by phone at 718-229-0300, Ext. 155.
