Corona man turns 103

Corona resident John “Ace” Custis shares a birth year with tycoon Howard Hughes, fashion designer Christian Dior and French playwright Jean-Paul Sartre, but only Custis is still reading newspapers today. On Tuesday, January 29, the Centenarian celebrated his 103rd birthday with local Councilmember Hiram Monserrate, who has whipped up a cake for Custis for the past four years.
“[Custis] puts things in an incredible perspective for me; I’m less than half his age and when I take a look at Mr. Custis, I know I have more than half way to go,” Monserrate said in a statement.
In 1905, the year Custis was born, a first-class stamp cost 2 cents, Theodore Roosevelt was serving as President, and Albert Einstein published a paper formulating the theory of relativity.
