Atria Kew Gardens resident turns 101

A constant commitment to leading a healthy lifestyle is what Thea Hochstadter attributes her being able to celebrate her 101st birthday on March 16.
Born in Munich, Germany, Hochstadter came to the United States in 1939 to get out before the war. She immediately settled in Washington Heights, living there with her husband Hans.
About three years ago, Hochstadter moved into Atria Kew Gardens, a senior living facility with about 160 residents.
“In my free time I like to read and be in contact with my friends,” said Hochstadter, who worked professionally doing office work.
Atria Engage Life Director Martin Ingber said that Hochstadter is famous for using the computer. She also frequently plays games such as rummy cube with the other residents.
“We’re very fond of her, we value her very much, and we’re very proud of her,” Ingber said.
Hochstadter said that the key to her longevity has been living a healthy lifestyle. She celebrated her 101st birthday on Sunday, March 16 with a party at the Atria, which was attended by fellow residents and family members.
“It’s just amazing,” said cousin Judy Rosen, a resident of Forest Hills who visits her on a weekly basis. “I’m very excited.”
The birthday celebration included decorations, cake, and a performance by singer Diana Templeton entitled “Everything Old is New Again.”
“I want to thank all of you who came to celebrate my 101st birthday with me,” Hochstadter said. “It’s not an achievement, it is an extraordinary grant for which I am very thankful. I did my best to achieve it. I always tried to lead a healthful, physical and mental, life which resulted in a happy life.”
