We attended the Little Neck-Douglaston Memorial Day Parade to honor and show respect for those who served and made the ultimate sacrifice. We were saddened by the sparse showing of American flags on homes in the neighborhood.
Our freedom was purchased with the blood, sweat and tears of our forefathers. In their wisdom, they fashioned a framework of government that gave us the freedom we enjoy today. That freedom should be cherished and all those who defended it should be immortalized.
Can we not do any less than remember them on Memorial and Veterans days by simply displaying the American flag and taking a moment to say a prayer for them, their families and our nation?
Can we not feel a responsibility to attend a parade in their honor with family and friends before going to a barbecue or shopping?
Can we afford to forget what happened to our nation on Sept. 11?
The tragic loss of life and the anguish of those families should be seared in our memories and hearts forever.
