Summer is here, which means family fun is in full throttle. State Assemblywoman Margaret Markey (D-Maspeth) will present a plethora of family fun through July in Woodside's Windmuller Park, at 39th Drive and 54th Street.
This series of family activities is thanks to the $125,000 in state funding from Markey, in addition to the cooperation and contribution of the Parks Department. The money raised for these activities will help support various children's performance programs, which will help young children between the ages of 4 and 10 participate in dance, theater and puppet shows, organizers said.
“There is no need to travel far this summer to enjoy the delights of the outdoors,” Markey said. “There is plenty of fun and excitement right here at home in our own neighborhoods.”
Kicking off the family fun on July 9, are performances by the musical group Blue Angel, consisting of John Turi, Arthur Neilson, Lee Brovitz, Johnny Morelli and Cyndi Lauper. The rain date is July 10 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Blue Angel, though never having an opportunity to break into mainstream music — they had one self-titled album in 1980 — has a strong fan base in the city. Although the band has not played united in over 20 years, watching Lauper and her band members reunite will be a treat.
July 13, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., will consist of arts and crafts, contests, inflatable rides, face painting, music and games — perfect for children and parents — presented by the city Parks Department.
Once the celebration and activities at Windmuller Park are over, the fun will continue on July 20 at Big Bush Park and July 27 at Frank Principe/Maurice Park, at 54th Avenue and 63rd Street. Be sure to join in on the fun both days from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
