U.S. News & World Report has named The Zucker Hillside Hospital in Glen Oaks to its list of top psychiatric hospitals in the nation.
The list of top psychiatric hospitals was included in their “America’s Best Hospitals” issue. This year, Zucker Hillside was ranked 19th. It also made the list last year, at which point its ranking was 22.
“Zucker Hillside is continually working for the patients and the communities that we serve,” said Dr. John Kane, the chairman of psychiatry at the hospital. “The recognition by U.S. News & World Report reaffirms the quality of our services and the positive impact we’ve had on the lives of countless patients.”
Zucker Hillside has 221 beds and is expected to begin a $120 million expansion project next year that will create a new inpatient pavilion. A new outpatient pavilion, which cost $33 million, opened in 2004.
Also a clinical research facility, The Zucker Hillside Hospital studies schizophrenia. It received a $9.8 million grant from the National Institute of Mental Health “to develop a new center to study the characteristics of people in the throes of their first episode of schizophrenia.”
Aside from The Zucker Hillside Hospital, only two other hospitals from New York State were listed for psychiatry.
In determining the rankings, reputation and outcomes were examined. The report also looked at factors related to care such as patient volume, nursing care and advanced technology. It also took into account recognition the hospital has received from other organizations.
