During the “Ugly Betty” series premiere party, at Highbar in Manhattan on September 15, The Queens Courier had a chance to talk to some of the show’s cast members about what they thought about being back in New York. Here is what they had to say:
“It’s the difference between night and day. It’s unbelievable.” – America Ferrera (Betty Suarez) said of the difference between shooting in New York compared to L.A.
“We are getting so much love from Queens because they’re so excited. I really feel a sense of family out there. And it gives us a good idea of what the Saurezes are really about.” – Ana Ortiz (Hilda Suarez)
“It’s worth it because it’s going to make the show look that much better.” – Mark Indelicato (Justin Suarez) said about shooting on location.
“I think we’ve been more than embraced. I think they [New Yorkers] feel justified since the series takes place in New York it should be in New York. If anyone should benefit from us being here, it’s them.” -Tony Plana (Ignacio Suarez)
“I can finally live again. I could not be happier.” – Judith Light (Claire Meade) said about moving back to New York
“It terms of the show it’s fantastic. You can’t fake a cab really beeping its horn or a fan really shouting across the street ‘we love you’ because they’re actually excited we’re on the street shooting. You don’t get that same kind of excitement and realism in L.A.” -Vanessa Williams (Wilhelmina Slater)
“I just think that’s such a great part of the show. Seeing Betty with her family juxtaposed to crazy mode in Manhattan I think [is] a really great part of the show and it keeps it grounded.” – Becki Newton (Amanda Tanen), a former Astoria resident, said of the Queens aspect of the show
“They’re hilarious. I love New Yorkers. They have energy like nobody else. It just adds to the vibe and energy when you’re out there working.” – Grant Bowler (Connor Owen)
