Now that the winter months are quickly approaching, many of our North Shore Towers snowbirds are making their way to warming locations. But, before leaving, there are certain things residents should make sure they do.
The following tips can be found on www.BestGuideRetirementCommunities.com.
1 - Any source of water in the apartment, including water valves to washing machines should be secured, whether that means turning off a faucet or checking that drains are open.
2 - Your apartment’s thermostat should be turned down, but not turned off. When heat is completely shut off, it can potentially cause water pipes to freeze if the weather gets cold enough.
3 - Any electrical appliances or computers, including your refrigerator if you are not using it, should be unplugged.
4 - Test your smoke alarm to make sure that it works.
5 - You may want to also ask someone to check on your apartment every so often while you are away.
Snowbirds may also want to leave their keys with someone or security in case there is an emergency and someone needs to get into the apartment.
Editor’s Note: Any snowbirds wishing to have the North Shore Towers Courier mailed to them at their winter homes should fill out the form on page 17 and leave it with management or your concierge.
