U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer (D−N.Y.) has asked U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood to order the Federal Aviation Administration to scrap a plan to transfer 100 weather specialists out of the New York area, lest it compromise air safety.
Schumer said the plan under consideration was to consolidate several FAA regions, but that it was ill−advised and could mean less efficiency and less current weather information in the nation’s most congested air travel area.
Schumer has been a longtime critic of the FAA during the administration of former President George W. Bush.
