Lighthouse opens VisionMax

For 104 years, Lighthouse International in New York has been helping blind and vision-impaired people. Now, they have opened VisionMax – a one-stop center to help you preserve your eyesight.

According to Vivian Torres Suarez, Senior Vice President of Services for Lighthouse International, “This new service extends our reach to the many New Yorkers who will need our expertise, as baby boomers age and more people have diabetes and other diseases that affect their eyesight.”

Conveniently located at 111 East 59th Street in midtown Manhattan – Queens residents can take the Q32 bus or the N or R-train to 59th Street – VisionMax and the Lighthouse Store offer complete vision exams, prescriptions, contact lenses, designer frames and sunglasses – as well as prevention and educational information.

“We have optometrists and ophthalmologists at VisionMax,” said Leslie Gottlieb, a Lighthouse spokesperson. “Our eye exams include dilation so that the retina can be examined – something you may not be getting,” she continued.

Gottlieb stressed the importance of an annual vision exam. “Glaucoma, for example, doesn’t have symptoms, but left untreated can lead to vision loss,” she said, adding, “It’s also important to establish a ‘baseline’ of medical records so the doctor can know if there’s been a change.”

To make it even more enticing, you can get 15 percent off on non-prescription designer sunglasses including Gucci, Dior and Nine West, until July 31.

Until August 26, VisionMax is on a summer schedule for eye exams: Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. No exams on Thursday or Friday during the summer. To schedule an appointment, call 212-821–9620.

The store is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The dispensary opens at 9 a.m. It closes at 5 p.m. on Monday and Thursday, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, and at 3 p.m. on Friday.

“Vision health is more than a pair of eyeglasses,” Suarez said. “It encompasses everything from a comprehensive eye exam to the lighting you read by, how much work you do on the computer, the foods you eat and the exercise you get.”
