Dragon Boat Festival activity schedule

SATURDAY, AUG. 8

10 a.m.: Lion Dancers open the festival and greet all.

10:30 a.m.: Queens Symphony Orchestra plays American classics.

11:30 a.m.: Dragon Dancing Team, invited dignitaries and the team parade officially open the festival.

1 p.m.: Lyrus Hung and her band “Meow” play a mix of fun rock and R&B mixed with hits from the ‘70’s.

2 p.m.: Warrior monks from the Shaolin Temple perform martial arts.

3-4:30 p.m.: Jack Hsu leads his band Hsu-Nami, an “ethnical fusion instrumental rock band.” Jack is most well-known for playing the er-hu, a Chinese violin.

SUNDAY, AUG. 9

10:30 a.m.: Chinese Music Ensemble of New York, is the oldest and only full-scale Chinese orchestra in the United States.

11 a.m.: Cover to Cover, a group of seasoned musicians from Broadway, play your favorite rock and roll tunes.

Noon: Edge. East-West jazz fusion fresh from the Vancouver International Jazz festival.

1 p.m.: Shaolin Kung Fu.

2-5 p.m.: Queens Theater in the Park showcase, including performances by Hong Kong micro-tonal guitarist, composer and arranger Simon Yu; Abdou Mboup, traditional Senegalese drummer and a key figure in the development of the Mbalax style of dance music; Luca Mundaca, Brazilian singer-songwriter; and Vintage DJ, in which DJ Johnathan Jacobs’ Time Machine show covers forgotten gems from the 1930s through the early ’70s.

All Day: In the Arts & Crafts Tent, some 20 artists will be demonstrating traditional Chinese crafts; the balloon man (twister) and face painter returns to the delight of all; and natives of Ecuador and Peru will be performing their lyrical music on traditional instruments.
