Cruising Riverdale by clunker

by DANIEL BEEKMAN

11th Council District incumbent Oliver Koppell and candidate Tony Perez Cassino are neck-in-neck. Koppell has the resume, Cassino the charisma. Koppell has the nursing homes, Cassino the nursery schools.

Koppell has a red ‘93 Ford Probe, Cassino a red ’90 Nissan 240SX. No kidding. These northwest Bronx pols cruise Riverdale Avenue via clunker.

“Say hello to the “campaign-mobile,” Cassino said.

The 240SX growls and coughs. It boasts automatic seatbelts.

Koppell knows Cassino’s ride by sight and vice versa. The stick shift Probe is a hand-me-down, Koppell said. The incumbent’s son used to own it.

Koppell and Cassino possess other vehicles: Koppell a hybrid, Cassino an SUV.

The incumbent is a former state attorney general, the insurgent a successful Manhattan lawyer.

Why the passé Probe? Why the dated 240SX?

No people’s champ boasts a Benz, perhaps. No blue-collar bureaucrat pushes a Lexus.
