Councilmen Thomas White (D-Jamaica) and James Sanders (D-Laurelton) defeated their opponents in Tuesday’s election to remain in office for another term .
White, who represents the 27th Council District, defeated Conservative candidate Ruben Wills, who had previously ran against the incumbent during the Democratic primary. Sanders, who represents the 31st District, trounced Republican Scherie Murray.
City Councilman Leroy Comrie (D-St. Albans) will serve a third term since he ran unopposed for the 28th Council district.
Although polling stations were not as filled as they were during last year’s elections, constituents came out in large numbers to make their voices heard.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg defeated Democrat William Thompson to remain the city’s top boss at City Hall. Even though the influential Rev. Floyd Flake crossed party lines to endorse the independent mayor, some voters in St. Albans and Laurelton still voted for Thompson due to Bloomberg’s decision to extend term limits.
