The iconic Worldport – formerly Pan Am terminal three now currently owned by Delta Airlines – will reportedly be torn down in favor of a $1.2 billion expansion of terminal four featuring more gates and baggage claims.
The deal negotiated with Port Authority officials made on Thursday, August 5 sealed the fate of the flying saucer shaped terminal, which will become a parking lot for the revamped terminal four. Officials say construction should be finished in 2013.
For two months, terminal three has been “tweeting” in the first person about its impending doom but has since accepted the Port Authority’s decision posting quips like “at least if they tear me down, they should get rid of the legion of pigeons living inside me” and “after they tear me down, do you think I’ll dream?”
The Worldport was built in 1960 at the beginning of commercial jet flights and is famous for its four-acre disc-shaped roof, which was built to allow the parking of aircrafts under the overhang. Officials have not yet revealed a date when the terminal will be demolished.
