You can horse around in Queens

Who says you can’t ride horses in Queens?

Lynne’s Riding School at 88-03 70th Road has been in business since 1982 and before that it was Lynne Holzhauer’s family’s business as Parkside Riding Academy for 50 years.

“I’ve been riding ever since I was a child, learning about horses and the horse business through my family. I’ve been teaching riding for 45 years,” Holzhauer said.

Lessons begin at an indoor ring and riders can advance to lessons in Forest Park once they have learned how to handle their horses at a walk and trot. Classes are taught individually until riders can properly handle their horses on a group ride. A predominantly English lesson barn, Lynne’s can also provide Western riding lessons.

They teach adults and children from five years old; beginners, intermediate and advanced riders, on the flat.

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced rider, the goal for you at Lynne’s Riding School is to ensure that you are well balanced in the saddle. You will learn how to hold your body in a strong position to establish comfort and union with your mount.

“We teach our riders basic horsemanship, using the proper form and centered riding principles,” said Holzhauer.

Most of their horses are Quarter Horses, and Holzhauer says they only offer horses with calm personalities that are responsive to all types of riders. They have several boarders, and offer boarding based on box stall availability.

“Our horses and our riders are very important to us, and we try to not only teach them proper riding techniques, but how to treat these magnificent animals, with safety for both horse and rider being a primary consideration” said Holzhauer.

Open Monday through Sunday, lessons are scheduled by appointment between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Although they try to accommodate everyone, they recommend booking in advance. There are also pony rides, school and camp courses and Girl Scout/Boy Scout horse badge accreditations. Gift certificates are available.

Consider Lynne’s Riding School for your next event or birthday party. Lynne’s provides three ponies and handlers per hour, and an adjacent party room for an hour and a half afterwards. Check out www.lynnesridingschoolnyc.com or call 718-261-7679 for more information.
