The famed Steinway Mansion has been put up for sale by the family that has owned in for 80 years. Asking $4.5 million for the 27-room house, Michael Halberian has spent his entire life maintaining the 170-year-old Astoria property and would like to see it converted into a museum.
According to the Astoria Historical Society, the mansion was built by optician Benjamin Pike in 1850 and was typical of large estate homes that lined the East River from Newtown Creek to the Long Island Sound. They said that the late Henry Steinway once remarked that, “it should be called the Halberian Mansion, as the Halberian family actually lived in it longer than the Steinways.” – Steve Mosco
