Giving back through food drives

With many borough residents in need of some help around the holidays, a number of local elected officials organized Thanksgiving food drives to support their constituents.

Smith gives out 200 turkeys – State Senator Malcolm A. Smith (left) helped give out more than 200 turkeys during his annual turkey distribution drive. Turkeys were donated by Arverne by the Sea, Farmbria, Food Town, Food World Supermarket, Fresh Direct, Royal Waste Services and Western Beef. Some of the helpers Smith had were Janice Clark and Melvin Betts, who both represent the Robert Ross Johnson Family Life Center in St. Albans.

Van Bramer food drive helps Woodside – In just two weeks, community members and business owners displayed their generosity by donating more than 400 canned goods and non-perishable food items to help local pantries supply food for families in need this holiday season. From boxes of stuffing to cranberry sauce, thanks to the generous community response Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer made an early Thanksgiving delivery to Saint Teresa’s Food Pantry in Woodside. Reverend Monsignor Denis Herron, (left to right) Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer, Lorraine Miles President of St. Teresa Food Pantry and Norberto Saldada, Saint Vincent de Paul District Council President of Queens, showed off some of the donations.

Peralta helps less fortunate on Thanksgiving – State Senator Jose Peralta, Fresh Direct, National Supermarkets Association, Health Plus, RWDSU and Plaza del Sol provided 250 turkeys to be distributed to 25 community organizations that provide food assistance. The event was sponsored by Latin American Immigrant Alliance and Elmcor.
