Snowball fight becomes New Year’s fistfight: DA

CAMBRIA HEIGHTS — New Year’s Eve turned bad for one Cambria Heights man.

James White, 50, was driving near the intersection of 219th Street and 107th Avenue at about 1:50 a.m. Jan. 1 when his car was hit by a snowball thrown by some people standing on the corner, according to the Queens DA.

When White got out of his car to confront them, six people surrounded him, and one of them — Rayon Gordan, 26, of 117-48 230th St. — allegedly punched him in the face, causing White to fall backward, hit his head on the ground and lose consciousness, the DA said.

White’s wife, Grace White, said she then watched as a woman, whom police had not arrested, walked over to her husband and stole a chain off of his neck, police said. The woman then walked away with Gordan and the others, the DA said.

James White sustained bleeding on the brain, and fractures to his jaw, which required him to have a plate and screws placed in his mouth for a month, during which time he was on a liquid diet, according to the DA.

Gordan was arraigned Jan. 12 on three robbery charges and was held on bail. He was scheduled to appear in court Jan. 26.
